The Notorious Glass Kats are the dynamic duo of long time glass artist Dan and Illustrator Juice. After a several years of painting and illustrative design, Juice was hanging around with Dan at his Nordic Glass Shop in Loomis, CA. He was astonished by the work being done there and suggested combining some glass scenery with some of Juice’s own illustrations. This conversation then shifted to a concept of fine art portraits created solely out of stained glass.

A piece of this detail would take a tremendous amount of forethought and time to realize and so the idea sat still with them for several weeks. In the meantime, Juice dropped by with an illustration of The White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland and suggested a merger of skill sets with a stained glass scene framing the printed illustration. And, so they did. It seemed at the time this was going to be the direction to go for the team. To date that was the only piece of it’s kind, and it sold failry quickly.

A month or so later, they revisited the concept of “The Glass Portrait”. Still reserved due to the amount of work involved, the two decided to just give it one shot. They decided on their first subject, Marilyn Monroe. Juice had done several paintings of Marilyn and so began to set up the illustration as if he was going to paint it. then he went to Dan’s shop with the outline. For their first go round they used an overhead projector to enlarge the sketch onto the wall and trace it to actual size.

Four weeks later Marilyn was completed. Both pleased with the result and thrilled at the response from friends and colleagues, they decided to proceed with their second piece, Frankenstein’s Monster. And, so began the newest venture in the lives of Dan and Juice, and they became The Notorious Glass Kats.

The Glass Kats also offer custom pieces anywhere from iconic portraits to elaborate door inlays and windows. They can create a glass portrait of the family pet, your favorite sports icon, your classic hot rod, The beautiful Gretsch Hollowbody Juice covets, or your dear Grandpa John. Each piece is a one of a kind. Glass Portraits cannot be made into prints or replicas. They are true collector’s pieces. Each portrait is numbered by the artists’ creations sequence rather than copy.
